How Teenagers Engage With Scripture (With Guest Co-Host Joemel Delossantos)

June 12, 2020 by Kreig Durham

This special episode marks one year since The Bible Burrito launched! We’ve got a new theme song and some new ideas on the way. To celebrate, we brought in a good friend of ours to talk about a topic familiar to all 3 of us: youth ministry. Joemel Delossantos serves as the Youth Pastor for First Baptist Church of Spring Valley as well as working part-time for Urban Youth Collaborative of San Diego. Recently, UYC has launched a podcast/show geared specifically to youth pastors, talking about a wide range of topics and delivering plenty of laughs. Joemel is co-host and producer for the UYC Show which you can check out on YouTube!

With Joemel, we discussed the unique ways in which teens engage with Scripture. Teenagers are blunt and brutally honest, and sometimes a bit fickle in their interests, but all of that combines into a very fresh way of doing ministry. As adults, we can quickly forget and belittle the experiences that students in youth ministry go though, so it’s vital the older generations take the time to understand and hear from this integral part of the church.

Chips and Salsa 6: Jeremiah and Suffering w/ Pastor Curtis King

October 30, 2019 by Kreig Durham

Pastor Curtis King joins us again for a hotseat round in our Chips and Salsa Minisode. This week, we ask Pastor King who his favorite person in the Bible is. The answer surprised us and led to a deep and emotional survey of the life of Jeremiah. Suffering is a part of life, and Jeremiah received more than most of that lot. Pastor King detailed what we can learn about perceived failure, a desire to succeed, and the facts of suffering from this important prophet.

Pastor King pastors Calvary Baptist Church in Niagara Falls, NY. You can find out more on the church website: http://calvarybaptistofniagara.com.

The Gospel in the Book of Titus – With Guest Co-Host Pastor Curtis King

October 22, 2019 by Kreig Durham

Curt & Kreig were privileged to have Curt’s dad Pastor Curtis King with us for this special topical episode. Pastor King joined us in studying how the Gospel is presented throughout the book of Titus. We often think of Titus as mostly an instructional book geared primarily to a church leader, but the entire basis of Paul’s letter to Titus hinges on the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In fact, each chapter has something unique and powerful to say in relation to the Gospel.

Curt also educates his dad on the British TV icon Doctor Who while Kreig drops some trivia about how Lucille Ball saved modern television.

Chips and Salsa 5 with Guest Nathan Birt

October 9, 2019 by Kreig Durham

Our guest co-host from last week agreed to get in the hot seat for our timed minisode. We asked Nathan what his life verse was and why, and he walked us through a meaningful look at a fantastic verse from Psalms. Being a children’s pastor, he’s a quick talker and quick thinker, so he breezed right through the question with plenty of time to spare, so we spent the remaining time talking about Psalms as a whole.

We also dove into the theological importance (or lack thereof) of beards. Nathan also peeled back the curtain to reveal the dark side of Curtis that comes out during family Monopoly games.

Guest Episode with Nathan Birt: Titus 1, The Qualifications of a Pastor

October 2, 2019 by Kreig Durham

Our very first ever guest co-host is a very good friend of ours: Nathan Birt. Nathan serves as the children’s pastor at Lancaster Baptist Church in Lancaster, CA, and he has also recently co-authored a devotional book on revival with Dr. John Goetsch. He also happens to be Curt’s brother-in-law! Nathan joins us today to break down the qualifications of a pastor from Titus chapter 1. The culture on the island of Crete stood in stark contrast to the kind of men God was calling to lead the churches in Crete, and we discuss why all of these items are such a big deal. Why be so strict, why be so specific, and does a list list this still hold any value in the 21st century church? We answer all of these questions and more!
As usual, you can count on us to veer wildly off topic from time to time. We delve into the theology of Daniel Tiger, which Greek words sound like medication, and reminisce about “the good old days” when we all were in Bible college together. You won’t want to miss this one!

1 John 3:11-24: Love is (Not) a Dagger
byCurt & Kreig

Chapter 3 of 1 John concludes with a case study of love. What is love? What does it look like? We dive into the second major theme of this letter: God is love. And because God is love, He expects His children to be examples of true love. From extreme examples of hatred like Cain to more reassurances about our relationship with God, we explore this fascinating passage.
